زیرِ بحث موضوع سے مراد یہ ہے کہ کسی چیز کو جانچنے کے لیے پیمانے کس طرح وضع ہونے چاہئیں؟

میں نے سوچا اس تحریر کا آغاز فیضؔ کے شعر سے کروں، جس میں پیمانے کا لفظ استعمال ہوا ہے، اور کہوں کہ یہاں پیمانے سے یہ پیمانہ مراد نہیں۔ پھر مجھے احساس ہوا کہ یہ پیمانہ بھی تو شراب کی پیمائش کے کام آتا ہے۔ اور اس سے بھی بڑھ کر شراب کا یہ پیمانہ فرد کی پیمائش کے کام آتا ہے۔ یعنی اس کے ظرف کی پیمائش۔

I was a subscriber myself and used to read it avidly.
At the same time, the notorious Cultural Revolution was taking place.
But in the magazine, they presented only happy faces.

An appropriated and monopolized intellectual space
Bureaucracy, technocracy, diplomats, and their ilk first serve the government.
That is, the Riyasati Ashrafiya first enjoy perks, privileges, junkets, and salaries extracted from the tax money of the people.
In other words, first they keep occupying the space provided by the façade of governance.
When they retire and after exhausting all other lucrative opportunities, such as SOE boards’ membership and any foreign posting, they come to occupy the intellectual space.
Now they start writing columns and articles in the newspapers and magazines, print and digital, both in English and Urdu, and come to occupy the intellectual space.
Because of their connections and influential networking on the one hand, and complete lack of meritocracy in the editorial rooms of the newspapers and magazines on the other, they are exclusively entertained and prioritized here.
They do write books also. And narrate stories of their successes and service to the “ailing humanity.” …

Bureaucratic implementation of government orders
How the implementation of a government order is accomplished in Pakistan is symptomatic of the bureaucratic control of the things!
The Punjab government allowed free travel on its Metrobus and Orange Train services. The next day I happened to travel via the Orange Train. They asked me to show my ID card.
So was the service free only for the Pakistani citizens? Or else, how many foreigners live in Pakistan?
That’s the bureaucratic style of execution.
Then why and after how many days was that frivolous requirement dropped? I don’t know.

The myth of hybrid regime
Mao Zedong said, “Let a hundred flowers blossom.” And it was Mao Zedong himself who plucked and crushed all of 99 flowers and forced others to nurture the remaining one, his flower.
A myth is like that. It is a truth about something that repudiates all other truths about that thing.
It is a theory that ensures no other theory takes root regarding the same thing.
That is, it poses itself as a “self-evident” statement that disregards all other statements at revealing the truth.
